What does the biodex balance assessment do?

The Biodex balance assessment is performed through a program called the Biodex Balance system. This system has the capabilities to perform a balance assessment on a person within two minutes. It assesses the person’s balance, mobility, and strength. It includes a time up and go assessment, which involves testing your gait. Gait is the pattern of walking for a person. Then there is a 30 second chair stand test, which targets a person’s strength and balance capabilities.

The final test is the 4-stage balance test. This test looks at how well a person can keep their balance. If a person cannot hold their balance for at least 30 seconds, they are likely to have a balance disorder. This assessment also holds the capability to test if a person is considered a fall risk.

What are the benefits of biodex balance assessment?

The major benefit of this assessment is in regard to personal safety. This test can prevent someone from hurting themselves any more than they already could be. Being an unknown fall risk and/or having balance issues can cause someone a serious or life-threatening injury. It benefits a person because if a problem is detected, they can start treatment as soon as possible, and create a care plan on how to counteract the condition that the person may suffer from.

When will I see the results?

After receiving a diagnosis, treatment can start as soon as possible, depending on the severity of the balance disorder, results can take weeks to months. Slowly over time, a person may notice small changes to their everyday routines.

They may feel more aware and centered and feel like walking around throughout the day. People may also experience struggles at first when doing this assessment, and as treatment begins, the progression to having a restored center of balance may take some time, but after a few weeks the results will be evident.

Who is the right candidate for biodex balance assessment?

Majority of patients who receive these assessments are people who are over the age of 65. People who are in the process of aging typically have multiple comorbidities that can contribute to a balance disorder. For example, Parkinson’s disease affects the part of the brain called the basal ganglia, and that is the essential part of the brain that controls and maintains a person’s balance. People who also may be considered a candidate are those who have suffered from a brain injury or brain tumor. Having either one of these things can cause irreversible damage to the brain and having that can ruin a person’s sense of balance and require testing to figure out what they would benefit from. People with brain tumors or who have suffered from a brain injury are likely to take longer to see results from any therapy or treatment for a balance problem with large amounts of damage and may require more assessments and treatment other than for balance. Children are rarely assessed for balance disorders. Children can be assessed for a balance disorder but most often they have an underlying condition, such as chronic headaches, ear infections, and genetic conditions.
